Regulatory & Governance System (La Liga)
La Liga Santander is the top football league in Spain and one of the 5 major leagues in Europe, they are the governing body that regulates and monitors all the activities that are happening between the club and within the clubs as well.
The league consists of 20 clubs, where every year 3 clubs are relegated and 3 clubs are promoted from La Liga SmartBank (Segunda/Second Division).
Hence, La Liga and the Spanish football federation have the authority to supervise and moderate certain aspects of each club.
The clubs with the biggest history and power in the league are FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF, and Atletico de Madrid. Those clubs have been the protagonists of the league for the past decades and they are mainly the clubs that represent Spain in the European arena along with Sevilla, Villa Real, and Atletic Club de Bilbao.
For Real Madrid, the biggest sport for the club is men's football, and for them to grow their team, they have to abide by the rules enforced by the governing body of the main league.
There are many abiding rules:
• Financial Fair Play is a very important rule that aims to even the playing field amongst the clubs as much as possible for the current moment, although it is far from perfect, it still stops many clubs from overspending, etc.
• The clubs that are a part of the league must follow the legal regime established by some regulatory articles of the Sports act.
• Set of mandatory regulations:
1) A specific name, corporate purpose, and registered office.
2) Governance and representation bodies and their duties and
powers, and also the system for appointing and dismissing them. The President
and the Assembly are necessarily governance bodies. Holding the office of
President shall be incompatible with holding a managerial position in a sports
club or joint-stock company of the associates of LaLiga.
3) Own and delegated powers.
4) Procedure for approving and reforming of its Articles of
Association and Regulations.
5) A specific disciplinary regime for its associates, which shall
necessarily include, in a differentiated manner, the system of infringements
and sanctions for its directors or administrators.
6) Capital, economic-financial, and budgetary management regime.
7) Grounds for winding up or liquidation.
8) Rules and standards for preparing budgets by its associates and
for overseeing them.
Dear The Fall of the Galacticos, every league has many rules indeed. Personally I think it sometimes goes too far, it seems more like a pure business than sport. As you show in this article, there are a number of rules that the competition can do something about. Do you think the competition should be allowed to do this at a club? I think clubs should have more power of their own instead of the competition. The competition should only regulate and not control everything.
ReplyDeleteI would like to hear what you think about this.

That's a really interesting topic to comment.
ReplyDeleteLa Liga has a very strict regulation and standards that they promote to follow and all the stuff, but then we can see that there are a lot of clandestin movements inside the matches, such as briberies and more.
I think that if there are these regulations, all the teams must follow for a fair competition, and La Liga directives have to follow that too ;)
I didn't know there were so many specific regulations in La Liga.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that to sustain an organization as successful as this one you have to have several documents drafting all the possible conflictive issues trying to satisfy all the clubs.

I found very interesting to learn about the specific regulations that clubs have to go through to be a part of a league, in this case, La Liga. Seeing how much power the league has over the clubs is impressive. I believe that if clubs are going to be regulated, La Liga should also be regulated. There is plenty of room to grow and improve La Liga standards to make the competition more easy and pleasant for the clubs, I think it is just a matter of time and patience.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting article again hahahaha. I have learned new things I didn't know and I have been able to confirm some things I already suspected again too. My question is, is it the best of the organizations?
ReplyDeleteGreat article and congratulations!
